Overview of donors' contributions
Established by UN Member States in 1950 with an initial budget of just $300,000, UNHCR has significantly expanded in response to the dramatic rise in forcibly displaced and stateless people - now surpassing 120 million globally.
As humanitarian and development needs have grown, so too has UNHCR’s budget, reaching over $10 billion in recent years. The critical work UNHCR does worldwide is made possible thanks to the generosity of our donors. Donors can give UNHCR discretion over how their funds are used, or they can choose to “earmark” their funding to some degree in order to ensure that it is allocated to specific needs.
UNHCR is grateful for all contributions but encourages donors to give as flexibly as possible, enabling it to channel funding towards emergencies or towards neglected crises, as well as the possibility to redeploy funds as priorities change in specific contexts.
