As of October 2020, Armenia hosted around 109,000 refugees and asylum-seekers. The vast majority (around 90,000 people) arrived between September and October that year as a result of the newly escalating conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. UNHCR is working closely with the Armenian government to address their essential needs.

UNHCR established its presence in Armenia in 1992, following a request from the Armenian Government to assist with the influx of 360,000 ethnic Armenian refugees coming from Azerbaijan, who fled from the conflicts in the Nagorno-Karabakh region between 1988 and 1992.

Since 2004, Armenia has received hundreds of ethnic Armenian refugees from Iraq and small numbers of asylum-seekers and refugees from other countries in the Middle East, Africa, Central America and Asia. Between 2012 and 2018, Armenia demonstrated an international burden-sharing approach towards about 22,000 persons displaced from Syria seeking protection in Armenia, of whom 14,000 continue to stay and seek protection in the country.

UNHCR’s work in Armenia focuses on protection needs as well as actively promoting the mainstreaming of displaced populations into the nationalization of the SDGs and into the Armenia Development Vision 2030.
