On July 13th, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) attended the Brosella festival, which took place on the footsteps of the Atomium. Visitors were able to step into an actual UNHCR tent where they could learn more about about refugees and their daily lives. In addition, you were able to test your knowledge on refugees by completing a short quiz.

You can read the right answers here below:

1. A refugee is a person who...

is forced to leave his or her country because of war, conflict or persecution

Refugees are people fleeing conflict or persecution. They are defined and protected in international law, and must not be expelled or returned to situations where their life and freedom are at risk. At UNHCR, we have been assisting them for over half a century.

2. How many people are forcibly displaced worldwide?

70.8 million

70.8 million people are forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, or human rights violations at the end of 2018

3. Which country hosts the largest number of refugees worldwide?

Turkey

For the fifth consecutive year, Turkey hosted the largest number of refugees worldwide (3.7 million)

Germany hosts the largest number in Europe and the 5th largest number worldwide (1.1 million refugees)

The second largest is hosted by Pakistan (1.4 million), the third by Uganda (1.2 million), and the fourth is hosted by Sudan (1.1 million).

Lebanon and Italy are also receiving refugees. Lebanon is hosting 949,700 refugees and Italy is hosting 189,243 refugees.

Top 5

Turkey 3.7 million

Pakistan 1.4 million

Uganda 1.2 million

Sudan 1.1 million

Germany 1.1 million

4. True or false. Half of the refugees worldwide are children.

True

Children below 18 years of age constituted about half of the refugee population in 2018, up from 41 per cent in 2009 but similar to the previous few years

*These numbers correspond to the 2018 UNHCR Global trends report.

5. True or False. Most refugees live in Europe.

False

Correct!

14% of refugees (including persons in a refugee-like situation) are hosted in Europe (excluding Turkey, which is hosting 18%).

6. The global population of forcibly displaced people over the past 9 years has...

Increased

The global population of forcibly displaced people grew substantially from 43.3 million in 2009 to 70.8 million in 2018, reaching a record high. The number of arrivals in Europe, however, has decreased significantly since 2015.

7. True or false. UNHCR and other UN organizations have enough funds to help refugees with shelter, safety, food and education for children worldwide.False

False

Unfortunately we do not have enough funds to provide shelter, food and education for refugees.

Based on contributions to date we expect funding for 2018 to meet just 55 per cent of the $8.2 billion that is needed.

The costs of inaction are high. Needs worsen, become more compounded. Emergencies become protracted. Solutions are put off. Crises become forgotten. People suffer. But timely support by donors may still avert the worst. Please consider donating.
