UNHCR 70 Anniversary

14 Dec 2020

Afghanistan/ Tajik refugees/ Sakhi camp near Maza-I-Sherif, Balkh province/ UNHCR/ A. Hollmann/ May 1995

December 14, 2020 marks 70 years since the UN General Assembly adopted the Statute of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Since 1951, our mission has been to protect people forced to flee, providing humanitarian assistance and solutions to millions around the world.

Given the rising numbers of the forcibly displaced, this is not a moment for celebration. But we are proud of our work within the United Nations and feel privileged to serve refugees, the internally displaced and the stateless.

Our 70th anniversary is a reminder to the world to tackle the root causes of displacement crises. Only concerted international action and political will can resolve new and protracted conflicts and crises.
