Temporary accommodation provided by UNHCR helped people in Batken survive winter

Adilbek Borlubayev and his family lost their home in Southern Kyrgyzstan in September 2022 after violence escalated along the border with Tajikistan.

Like more than 142,000 persons displaced from Batken and Osh oblasts, with homes, schools and key infrastructure damaged or destroyed, Adilbek’s family became particularly vulnerable ahead of the upcoming winter months.

To support displaced persons who lost their houses, UNHCR provided winterised housing units which accommodated 81 persons, including the Borlubayev family, and enabled them to stay warm during the winter.

“Thank God this is good. It is warm inside, and we have a stove…It’s not cold when you wake up in the morning,” said Adilbek.

UNHCR received USD 500,000 from Government of Japan to aid internally displaced people and returnees with protection, emergency shelter and winterization assistance.

As part of the project, UNHCR, through the Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan, supplied displaced people, returnees and host communities with essential core relief items, coal for heating, and emergency shelter to protect them from the cold winter until their homes were restored.

The contribution from Japan also enabled UNHCR, in cooperation with NGO Fergana Valley Lawyers without Borders, to help restore property and civil documents, including birth certificates, to ensure that displaced persons have legal proof of identity to access essential services, social benefits and humanitarian assistance.
