We hope you have a rich and rewarding experience communicating with the refugee you’ve been connected to. You will have the opportunity to tell stories, share photos and enjoy a cultural exchange of ideas and insights into each other’s lives.

To make this the best experience possible, it’s important that both donors and refugees feel safe and secure on this platform. To help you understand what is and isn’t appropriate subject matter and language, we’ve compiled a list of Community Standards which we ask you to abide by.

We also have a dedicated team that reviews all messages before they are sent, to ensure that no-one can send or receive content that could be viewed as upsetting or offensive.

We reserve the right to ensure these standards are adhered to. If, for any reason, a user fails to observe the standards, we will return their message citing the Community Standard they failed to meet. We will offer the user the opportunity to modify their message and resend it. In instances of repeated violations, we reserve the right to ask people to withdraw from Connecting Worlds. We know that you’ll understand the need for these standards and we appreciate your support in observing them.

As a general rule please ensure that all your messages are respectful and polite.

Inappropriate subject matter

While it can be tempting to share personal issues or difficulties as part of your conversation, the purpose of the app is to build a deeper understanding of life in each other’s countries. For inspiration and advice from previous app users on the types of topics that are appropriate visit Our Community.

Inflammatory content – religion or politics

Sometimes we want to talk about politics and sharing thoughts on current affairs can inspire fascinating discussions. But these can also be sensitive conversations. Please avoid sharing views about religion or politics that risk offending your match. If the refugee you’re connected to brings up these subjects, we advise you to discuss with care and sensitivity.

Hate speech

Please do not use incendiary language or hate speech. Make sure your message doesn’t contain speech that may cause harm or upset.

Bullying or harassment

Connecting Worlds provides an opportunity to connect with a refugee in Jordan. Please keep your messages respectful and polite.

Direct threats

Threats are not acceptable. This is a space for sharing and conversation. If you are concerned about the conversations with your match, please contact our team via the Support function.

Offensive language

Do not send messages with offensive language that may cause harm.

Violent or graphic content or language

Do not share violent and graphic content that may cause harm.

Promoting or publicizing crime

Do not promote or publicize criminal behaviour. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact our team via the Support function.

Sexual violence and exploitation

Messages of a sexual nature, along with messages offering or requesting sexual content are strictly forbidden.

Photographs and inappropriate images

Please don’t send or share images that include identifying information that could put you or your match at risk, such as details of your address or place of employment.

Romance or romantic gestures

This is your unique chance to understand more about the lives of refugee families living in Jordan. Please do not use this app to ask for requests from your family. Share your experiences instead.

Unfair or exploitative requests

Sharing or asking for details for direct contact

We are committed to maintaining the privacy of everyone who participates in Connecting Worlds, which is why we ask you to refrain from requesting or sharing contact details with your match, and keep all communications within the app.

Invitation to connect via social media

The app has been designed to provide a safe place for you and your match to hold a conversation in a way that retains the privacy of everyone involved. We have a dedicated team that reviews all messages before they are sent, to ensure that no-one can send or receive content that could be viewed as upsetting or offensive. For this reason, please don’t request or share social media details and keep all communications within the app.

Sharing internet links

Please don’t share internet links with your refugee family. If you have read or seen something interesting online, perhaps you can describe it instead.

Requests for financial support

All of the refugees taking part in the Connecting Worlds experience, including the person you have been matched with receive monthly cash assistance from UNHCR. Your donation is helping to fund UNHCR's cash assistance scheme which supports the most vulnerable refugees in Jordan each month. This is why it is not necessary to send direct donations to families or individuals.

Cash assistance is not only a cost-effective way of giving – with more than 98% of your donation going straight to refugees – but it allows people the freedom and dignity to spend money in a way that best meets their family’s needs. In addition, regular monthly donations from donors like you, help UNHCR forecast how best to support families most in need.
