Translation protocol

Last updated:

A good translation will transmit the same meaning of survey questions to respondents from different socio-linguistic and cultural backgrounds, even if it is not a word-by-word translation.

This RMS translation protocol outlines step-by-step guidance for translation of the Results Monitoring Surveys (RMS) Standard Questionnaire, but the steps are equally applicable to other survey-based questionnaires.

The accompanying RMS translation protocol template provides an example of document translation, including the recording of discrepancies during back translation.

The questionnaire needs to be tested in the field before the survey starts, so translations need to be ready in time for field-testing.

UNHCR colleagues can access the RMS intranet page to find additional resources and learn more about the RMS.
