Meet us at this summer’s political festivals

19.06.2025

UNHCR will speak at political festivals in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Estonia.

🇸🇪 Almedalsveckan

UNHCR will speak at or co-host the following panel discussions:

Russia’s actions in Ukraine, war crimes, children, destruction

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused war crimes and forced displacement, with children as particular victims. How can the international community act to protect these children, document the crimes and hold the perpetrators accountable?

Join Annika Sandlund, UNHCR Representative for the Nordic and Baltic countries, in a discussion with Hanna Gerdes, Chair of Civil Rights Defenders, and Annika Flensburg, Communications Manager at Kvinna till Kvinna.

Watch a recording of the discussion here.

Global trends and future aid

Trade wars, geopolitical changes and new global trends require tailored solutions to address poverty, the climate crisis and humanitarian needs. What do these changes mean for future aid?

Join us for a discussion featuring Annika Sandlund, UNHCR Representative for the Nordic and Baltic countries, Anders Årbrandt, Managing Director of the Swedish Postcode Lottery, Annika Otterstedt, Head of the Results Department at Sida, Gustav Lind, Secretary General of the World Wildlife Fund, and Hanna Gerdes, Chair of Civil Rights Defenders.

Recording of the event will be available here, streamed live.

📅 25 June, 09:00 – 09:45

📍Smedjegatan 19

When aid collapses, who delivers then

Can self-interest be reconciled with moral duty? As global crises intensify and political agendas overshadow humanitarian needs, critical questions arise about our collective responsibility and ethical obligations. How can we ensure sustainable aid in the future?

Join us for an discussion led by Annika Sandlund, UNHCR Representative for the Nordic and Baltic countries, alongside Jakob Granit, Director General of Sida, Isabella Olsson, Head of Global Advocacy at Läkarmissionen / LM International, Jacob Risberg, Member of Parliament and Foreign Affairs Committee, Green Party, and Katarina Tolgfors, Member of Parliament and Foreign Affairs Committee, Moderate Party.

Who builds trust, part 1 – Media’s responsibility in society

The media play a major role in solving society’s biggest problems. In the discussion, experts will challenge the leadership of Finland’s leading news outlets to reflect on the media’s potential and responsibility, using two examples: just transition and forced displacement. How can these issues be communicated in a way that supports solutions, inclusion and trust?

The discussion is organised by the Kalevi Sorsa Foundation, the Finnish Foundation for Communication and Development, the Finnish Refugee Council and the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR.

🇪🇪 Arvamusfestival

What role do Tove Jansson’s stories and Ilon Wikland’s art play in shaping an open and inclusive society?

This discussion explores how their creative work touches on themes such as war, displacement, and solidarity – and how it continues to inspire social initiatives today. We welcome everyone to join the conversation and share ideas on how cultural heritage can promote empathy, mutual understanding, and a more caring society.

The discussion is organized by UNHCR in cooperation with Ilon Wikland’s Foundation. Olga Sõtnik, UNHCR Government Liaison Officer in Estonia, will moderate the debate.

📅 9 August, 10:00 – 11:30
