Calling Syria

Abdallah takes us to a spot where refugees can pick up a Syrian phone signal. Everyone wants to know if it's safe to go home.

Abdallah tries to catch a signal at Za'atari refugee camp, Jordan.

At Za'atari refugee camp in Jordan, 12 kilometres from the Syrian border, there's a spot known as Syriatel Hill. It's a gentle rise, really, but the topography is just right for staying in touch. From here, refugees with Syrian phones can often pick up a Syrian phone signal and make local calls to friends and family back home. "Everyone is here to talk to their relatives," says Abdallah, a 12-year-old refugee from just across the border.

In this short video, part 3 in a trilogy that our crew shot with a GoPro camera, Abdallah takes us to Syriatel Hill.

Watch part 1 of the trilogy, as Abdallah works to help support his family.

Watch part 2 of the trilogy, as Abdallah introduces some of the friends he's made while playing football at the camp.
