From Uncertainty to Opportunity: The Power of Legal Assistance
The legal assistance provided through the legal clinic has enabled Camila to move forward with greater clarity and confidence in key processes for her integration in Mexico.
When Camila arrived in southern Mexico, she was not only seeking safety, she was looking for an opportunity to start over.
Like many people forced to flee, she soon realized that rebuilding her life involved much more than finding a place to stay. Without documentation, accessing healthcare, finding a job, or continuing her studies seemed out of reach.
Camila did not know where to begin. That’s when she learned about a legal clinic supported by UNHCR. From the very first moment, she received guidance and found something she had lacked since her arrival: clear orientation and support to move forward.
“I was received by lawyers at the clinic. They explained how the process would work and asked for my information,” Camila explains.
Timely access to legal guidance can make a tangible difference in the lives of refugees. Thanks to funding from the European Union and the joint work of UNHCR and academia, displaced people receive specialized support to build new opportunities.
With funding from the European Union, through a partnership between UNHCR and the Autonomous University of Chiapas (UNACH), Camila was able to access free legal counseling. There, law students, guided by their professors, provide support to refugees and asylum seekers, helping them navigate legal processes that can otherwise be overwhelming.
Thanks to this support, Camila obtained a key document that allows access to essential services. More than just paperwork, it opened the door to new opportunities.
“Now I can access social security, go to doctors and clinics. I can also get better job opportunities,” she explains.
Young law students take part in training sessions on assisting displaced people. “We have provided legal counseling in shelters and public spaces such as the municipal park, where people can come to clear their doubts,” says Larissa Marroquín, professor at the School of Legal Sciences and coordinator of the clinic.
Today, what once seemed impossible has become a clearer path toward independence.
“Having the clinic’s free support has been very important for me, honestly, because without the clinic and without UNHCR, I wouldn’t have been able to obtain documentation,” Camila says.
Ariel was one of the law students who assisted Camila. “It has changed the way I see people on the move. It’s not the same to know the topic theoretically as it is to hear someone’s experience firsthand. Academically, we develop skills that cannot be learned in the classroom,” he explains.
Stories like Camila’s reflect the impact of bringing legal assistance closer to those who need it most. In places like Tapachula, where thousands of people arrive seeking protection, these initiatives ensure that people who have been forced to flee are not only safe, but can also rebuild their lives with dignity.
At the same time, students participating in these clinics gain practical experience while directly contributing to the protection of refugees.
