Finland’s support to UNHCR’s disability inclusion efforts enables us to provide specialized accommodation and support to people with disabilities, like Artur in Ukraine.

Finland’s longstanding partnership with UNHCR reflects a strong shared commitment to international protection, multilateral cooperation, human rights, and durable solutions for displaced populations.

Finland's support for UNHCR

Finland has been a member of UNHCR's Executive Committee since 1979, and the country’s support for UNHCR has been crucial in advocating for those caught in humanitarian crises.

Finland is particularly recognized as a global leader in promoting the inclusion of persons with disabilities in humanitarian responses. It is also a strong advocate for gender equality and the rights of women and girls, and places a clear focus on gender equality, comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights, protection from gender-based violence, and the meaningful participation of women and girls in humanitarian responses and peacebuilding efforts.

At the Global Refugee Forum 2023, Finland reaffirmed its solid commitment to responsibility-sharing, solutions-oriented responses, and support to refugees in protracted crises, with a particular emphasis on inclusion, self-reliance, and addressing the root causes of displacement. Finland also highlighted the importance of youth participation and inclusive peace processes as essential elements for sustainable solutions.

Multi-year flexible funding is an integral part of Finland's partnership with UNHCR. Finland’s commitment to providing predictable and quality funding, with majority of the contributions being flexible, enables UNHCR to protect and assist forcibly displaced people when new emergencies arise, as well as in protracted and underfunded crises that receive less public attention.
