UNHCR staff register refugees at the Douma registration center on the outskirts of Damascus. Registering with UNHCR ensures that the most vulnerable refugees receive aid.

  • Launch of the World Refugee Flags by the Chief Minister. The ACT government will fly World Refugee Day flags in the parliamentary zone to mark World Refugee Day.

Where: Commonwealth Bridge, Kings Avenue and Russell Circle, ACT.

When: 14-21 June 2006

  • Lighting in blue of the Captain Cook Jet on Lake Burley Griffin and other key Canberra icons. The National Capital Authority will light the Jet and the National Carillon to coincide with the lighting of the Jet d'eau in Geneva, Switzerland. Other key public buildings will also be lit blue.

Where: Captain Cook Jet, Lake Burley Griffin, the National Carillon on Aspen Island, the National Art Gallery, Questacon, the National Archives and the National Library, Old Parliament House, Canberra.

When: 16-20 June, 5.00pm - 8.00pm

  • World Refugee Day poster, photographic and information display The ACT Refugee Resettlement Committee will be hosting a WRD event at St John the Apostle Parish. Visitors will be able to sign the 'Welcome Book'.

Where: Foyer, St. John the Apostle Church, Blackham Street, Holt, ACT.

  • Public Forum on World Refugee Day The ACT Refugee Resettlement Committee will be holding a public forum on WRD with guest speakers including former refugees.

Where: St John's Community Hall, cnr Blackham - Chave Streets.

  • Australia for UNHCR World Refugee Day Breakfast.

Mr Garry Linnell, Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin, will be Master of Ceremonies and guest speakers include: Australia for UNHCR patron the Hon Tim Fischer AC; Special Representative of Australia for UNHCR Mr Ian Chappell; and former refugee Ibasi Ohinde.
