On 1 and 2 June 2021, UNHCR held two training sessions for cultural mediators working in Una Sana Canton, BiH.
The participants included cultural mediators from Save the Children, IOM, JRS, MdM, UNFPA, Vasa Prava, CWS.
The training sessions were designed to refresh cultural mediators on the importance of their role in improving understanding, creating relationships, and ultimately bridging the gap between refugees/migrants and service providers.
The training sessions covered effective communication skills, cultural influences and barriers to communication, as well as interpretation and translation techniques.
Critical to UNHCR’s mandate, the training session provided briefing on the asylum system and procedures in BiH and the professional obligations of cultural mediators in this context. Given the unique challenges and stressors of working in this context, the training session ended on fostering positive well-being and resilience.
Additionally, it was an excellent opportunity for cultural mediators from various organizations to come together and share experiences and best practices utilized in the field.
