With the support of UNHCR, the Public Institution Centre for Education of Judges and Prosecutors of FBiH in cooperation with the Association Vaša prava BiH organized an online professional training for judges of municipal courts and employees of social work centres in FBiH on the topic “special non-litigation procedures – the procedure of determining the time and place of birth of a person”.
Organising of this training was motivated by the adoption of the Law on Amendments to the Law on Out-of-Court Procedure of the FBiH, which significantly affects the resolution of statelessness.
The mentioned law prescribes the procedure for determining the time and place of birth for persons who are not registered in the birth register, and they cannot prove the time and place of their birth in accordance with the regulations.
“Given that this is a new type of non-litigious court procedure that should enable persons at risk of statelessness to register in birth registers and citizenship records and obtain a legal identity, it is of great importance that judges and employees of social welfare centres work are familiar with the principles of this law in order to more effectively address cases affecting this group of people in the future”, said Emir Prcanović, Executive Director of Vaša Prava BiH on behalf of the co-organizers.
He also mentioned that the efficient resolution of such cases contributes to the realization of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s commitment given during the 2019 High-Level Segment held within the 70th session of the UNHCR Executive Committee to improve the birth registration of all children through improved regulations and practices.
Vaša Prava BiH, with the support of the UNHCR, works daily to assist institutions and provide direct legal assistance to persons in need to resolve statelessness. This also directly helps the functioning of the judicial system of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“Together with the Public Institution Center for Education of Judges and Prosecutors of the FBiH, we are contributing to the progress of civil society in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Prcanović concluded.
