This 12-minutes documentary film talks about statelessness as a problem that UNHCR is addressing globally, including in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
In 2022, UNHCR BiH assisted Giorgio Ghiotto, a young Italian documentary film director and cinematographer, in making this short film about a person from Sarajevo who lives without documents (at risk of statelessness).
Born from a Bosnian refugee family in Kosovo*, Nihada has a birth certificate from Kosovo. Since Bosnia and Herzegovina does not recognise Kosovo as an independent state, Nihada cannot get any documents in this country.
She lives without an ID, without Bosnia and Herzegovina citizenship, and cannot attend high school, cannot get health insurance.
This is her story.

Access to Asylum in Bosnia and Herzegovina Video Explainers
UNHCR in Bosnia and Herzegovina created a series of video explainers in several languages bringing closer to potential asylum-seekers, including Unaccompanied or Separated Children, the information on access to international protection in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Video explainers use understandable graphics and clear instructions harmonized with other Communicating with Communities tools such as brochures and posters readily available in reception centres and BiH Service for Foreigners’ Affairs field offices in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Apatridija znači život bez državljanstva i svega što iz njega proizilazi. Biti apatrid znači živeti bez pristupa obrazovanju, zdravstvenoj zaštiti ili zakonskom zaposlenju. Može značiti i život bez mogućnosti sklapanja braka, posedovanja stana, slobode kretanja – život na marginama društva, lišen perspektive i nade. Četiri godine nakon pokretanja desetogodišnje #IBelong (Ja pripadam) kampanje za iskorenjivanje apatridije u svetu, UNHCR, Agencija UN za izbeglice, uputila je apel državama da preduzmu brže i odlučnije korake da ispune cilj kampanje.
Serbia: Medics Use Park as Surgery
Refugee families, mainly from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq and other places scarred by war and persecution, have been sleeping in the open in a park in the Serbian capital Belgrade. During the mornings, groups of volunteers arrived. Medical students like Sofija are eager to help young and old seeking safety in Europe.
Regional Housing Programme: Achievements in 2018
Close to 3 000 most vulnerable refugee families have received new homes by June 2018 in four RHP countries. At the last Assembly of Donors meeting, held on 6 June in Zagreb, 7 new sub-projects were approved in favour of Partner Countries, bringing the overall number of beneficiary families to be housed by the end of 2020 to 11 000.
