Safeguarding Individuals

Safeguarding Individuals

Every human being deserves a life free from persecution and discrimination.
But displacement can affect anyone. Hundreds of thousands of people are forced to flee their homes every day – young and old, sick and healthy, sons and daughters. At UNHCR, it is our job to protect and safeguard their rights. We work hard to help millions of people all over the world rebuild broken lives and restore shattered communities.

Children

Over half of the world’s refugees are children. UNHCR works with partners to assist, protect and find solutions for displaced children.

Women

In some societies, women and girls face discrimination and violence every day. Our work builds upon women’s own resilience and strength, and helps them to improve their lives.

Older-People

The elderly are sometimes reluctant to leave their homes and the last to flee from danger. We work hard to support and protect older people on the move.

People with Disabilities

People with disabilities remain largely invisible or forgotten in their uprooted communities.

LGBTI persons

Nobody should be forced to flee their home for being who they are or loving who they love.

HIV

Treatment for HIV and access to comprehensive reproductive health services should be a right for everyone, including the forcibly displaced.
