*UNHCR’s operations in Czechia are managed by the Hungary multi-country office, which also oversees operations in Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia, with needs budgeted jointly.

Czechia hosts one of the largest refugee populations both overall and per capita in the European Union, and remains a key destination for people fleeing the war in Ukraine. By mid-2023, over 530,000 Ukrainians had been granted Temporary Protection (TP) in the country, with nearly 350,000 retaining active status. UNHCR has been present in Czechia since 1992, working closely with government counterparts, national institutions, and local partners to uphold the rights of refugees and asylum-seekers and ensure access to basic services, legal aid, and protection.

In 2024, UNHCR expanded protection monitoring and socio-economic inclusion efforts across all 14 regions in partnership with the Ministry of Interior and municipalities. Despite challenges such as reduced housing aid and regional disparities in service delivery, refugees continued to enjoy full access to asylum, territory, and social protection. Inclusion programmes supported over 60 municipalities, while refugee-led organizations – 87% of which were led by women and Ukrainians – played a growing role in community engagement and integration.

The UNHCR office in Prague is part of the Regional Representation for Central Europe, based in Budapest, and supports a multisectoral, government-led response focused on protection and public solidarity with forcibly displaced and stateless people.
