UNHCR works in the Netherlands to ensure access to protection for refugees and asylum-seekers, support resettlement efforts, and build public understanding and solidarity through advocacy, policy engagement, and partnerships.

By the end of 2024, the Kingdom of the Netherlands hosted approximately 260,000 refugees, including 120,000 individuals from Ukraine benefiting from temporary protection under the EU’s Temporary Protection Directive, and other recognized refugees from countries such as Syria, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Iran, Türkiye, and Yemen. UNHCR in the Netherlands, based in The Hague and part of the multi-country office in Brussels, works to:

  • ensure access to protection
  • support resettlement efforts
  • foster public support for refugees through policy engagement, advocacy, and fundraising.

Together with the Belgium multi-country office, we collaborate with the EU to strengthen refugee protection both within Europe and globally. This includes promoting alignment of EU laws and policies with the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol, and advocating for sustained support to regions hosting the majority of the world’s forcibly displaced.
