439,097

people were identified in need of international protection in the country at the end of 2024, mostly from Venezuela

$73.3 million

are needed in 2025 to ensure that operations and programmes in Ecuador are sustained

Due to its geographical position and its historical solidarity towards forcibly displaced people, Ecuador is a country of destination, transit, and origin of mixed movements from several countries. Ecuador is home to one of the largest refugee populations in the region – mainly from neighbouring Colombia – and to the fourth-largest community of Venezuelan refugees and migrants in Latin America.

UNHCR works with authorities, civil society, other UN Agencies, as well as partners and the private sector to help refugees, asylum-seekers, other people forced to flee, and their hosts thrive in Ecuador. This includes facilitating access to the asylum and other protection procedures, providing key information on services, rights, obligations and assistance, and supporting an environment conducive to the social and economic inclusion of people forced to flee.
