Haiti
Haiti faces a multidimensional crisis with continuing gang violence, mass displacement, and severe humanitarian needs. Despite efforts toward stability, the situation remains dire, demanding urgent international solidarity.

*UNHCR’s operations in Haiti are managed by the United States multi-country office, which also oversees operations in the United States and 18 Caribbean States and overseas territories: Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines; the British overseas territories of Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, and Turks and Caicos Islands; and the Dutch overseas territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Sint Maarten, with needs budgeted jointly.
Haiti is grappling with a deepening humanitarian crisis, as insecurity and violence have internally displaced over 1 million people within the country as of the end of 2024.
In response to the escalating needs, UNHCR has expanded its operations, delivering protection services, legal aid, and emergency support to displaced families. We are also working to strengthen civil registration systems to help prevent and reduce statelessness.
The scale of the crisis is alarming: nearly half of Haiti’s 11.9 million people now depend on humanitarian assistance. Gang violence and political turmoil have made Haiti the country with the highest number of crime-related displacements globally.
In 2024 alone, UNHCR reported more than 350,000 Haitian refugees and asylum-seekers around the world, many of whom are undertaking perilous journeys across the Americas and the Caribbean.
