Mozambique

Since 2017, Mozambique has been grappling with a complex humanitarian crisis fueled by violence from non-state armed groups. This ongoing insecurity has displaced over 500,000 people internally and affected the lives of around 23,000 refugees and asylum-seekers the country hosts.

At the same time, Mozambique remains one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries. By the end of 2024, many people were internally displaced due to extreme weather events.

Together with government and development partners, UNHCR is supporting displaced people in the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, and Niassa, as well as refugee-hosting communities. Efforts also include preparing for and responding to natural disasters - such as cyclones, floods, and droughts - ensuring a comprehensive approach to protection and resilience.
