Tajikistan hosts the largest refugee population in Central Asia, with numbers increasing due to arrivals from Afghanistan. UNHCR works to strengthen local asylum systems, ensuring that refugees have access to protection, documentation, and essential services, including education and healthcare. Given the country’s shared border with Afghanistan,
UNHCR also plays a critical role in emergency preparedness, working with national authorities to provide humanitarian assistance and support community resilience. Statelessness reduction efforts have also progressed, with thousands benefiting from legal assistance to regularize their status.
