Tunisia is a key country along the central Mediterranean route, with complex and mixed movements of refugees, asylum-seekers, and migrants arriving from across Africa and the Middle East.

By the end of 2024, UNHCR had registered over 12,000 refugees and asylum-seekers in the country, most of whom had fled armed conflict and violence. The evolving political and operational environment, marked by government investigations into civil society actors and peaceful protests by refugees demanding relocation, led UNHCR to adapt its response by directly implementing key activities.

Despite limited resources, UNHCR continued to provide life-saving support, including healthcare, shelter, legal aid, and multi-purpose cash assistance, with a focus on protecting the most vulnerable individuals such as survivors of torture, gender-based violence, and unaccompanied children.
