all known cases of statelessness in the country, becoming the second country in worldwide to achieve this milestone.

In October 2024, Turkmenistan became the second country in the world to resolve all known cases of statelessness – a historic achievement reflecting its strong commitment to the right to nationality. It remains the only country in Central Asia that is party to both the 1954 and 1961 Statelessness Conventions and is an active member of the Global Alliance to End Statelessness.

By the end of 2024, Turkmenistan hosted 12 refugees recognized under UNHCR’s mandate, with no new asylum-seeker arrivals reported since the establishment of its national asylum system in 2005. In addition, the country has identified over 3,000 individuals in refugee-like situation, primarily from Afghanistan.
