Yemen on the brink of Famine this Ramadan

19 Apr 2021

As we enter the holy month of Ramadan, Yemen remains the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. With Yemen once again at the brink of famine, displaced Yemenis like Fattoum are four times more at risk of falling into hunger. Hunger that Fattoum and her children sadly know too well.

“I suffer through poverty, exhaustion and sadness… I don’t sleep or rest because of my fear for my children”, Fattoum told us with tears in her eyes.

The hardships faced by Fattoum are severe. She has health issues, a disability which it makes it hard to walk, and shoulders the sole responsibility of her four children since their father died, all the while living in a tented shelter far away from her home facing uncertainty and hunger on a daily basis. Despite everything, Fattoum is resilient and endlessly devoted to her children, even opening a small shop in her tent to try to improve their situation.

Throughout the holy month of Ramadan, our teams are on the ground doing everything they can to help families in dire need. 80% of the population is relying on aid to survive, but this critical work remains severely underfunded. Your support today can provide emergency cash assistance that goes directly to displaced families like Fattoum’s so she can provide shelter, food, water and medicine to her children.

Drop here!

This Ramadan, every second counts to give a family in need a second chance. Your gift will help to save lives in Ramadan and the months ahead.

“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase.” [Al Tawba:103]

Refugees are living in an “emergency within an emergency”, and more families need our help to face the challenges to come. Zakat funds allow us to cover the immediate needs of families living under the extreme poverty line. You can calculate your Zakat here: https://zakat.unhcr.org/hk/zakat-calculator and offer it to a refugee or displaced family who has fled from some of the world’s most devastating crises. 100% of your Zakat is guaranteed to reach refugees as lifesaving cash or in kind assistance.

Dedicate your Zakat now to refugees who are unable to reach the safety of home this Ramadan. If anyone is eligible for Zakat, it is those who have lost everything except their faith in a better tomorrow. It takes seconds to give your Zakat to those who need it the most today.

Displaced Yemeni

More than six years of conflict in Yemen has led to the internal displacement of over 4 million people, while multiple crises, including the pandemic, have led to 9.6 million people becoming at risk of famine. Over HK$205 million in Zakat funds were distributed to internal displaced people, providing 651,425 individuals with much-needed cash assistance to meet their shelter and daily needs. Cash assistance is distributed through two commercial banks and can be received through more than 500 cash financial service points throughout the country.

In addition, Sadaqah donations amounted up to HK$15.5 million to keep internally displaced families safe from COVID-19 and ensure their daily needs are met.
