European Union support strengthens refugee registration and protection services in Jordan
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, expresses its deep appreciation for the continued support of the European Union’s Humanitarian Aid, which remains essential in sustaining key protection services for refugees across Jordan. Through the European Union ‘s contribution, UNHCR is able to maintain and strengthen two of its most critical protection entry points: refugee registration and the UNHCR Helpline
Registration lies at the heart of UNHCR’s protection work. It provides refugees with the documentation they need to access services, receive assistance, and exercise their rights in Jordan. With more than 352,000 refugees registered with UNHCR, continuous investment in registration systems ensures that records remain accurate, services offered by the Government and other agencies are delivered efficiently, and the most vulnerable individuals are prioritized for support. The European Union funding enables UNHCR to operate registration centres in Amman, Zaatari Camp, and Azraq Camp, expand mobile registration services for those with mobility challenges or who live in remote areas, and reinforce the use of digital and biometric tools to enhance security and accessibility.
In addition to registration, the European Union plays a pivotal role in supporting UNHCR’s Helpline, which receives close to one million calls every year. The Helpline serves as a vital lifeline for refugees who rely on it for accurate information, guidance on accessing services, protection counselling, and updates on individual requests. The European Union’s support ensures that the Helpline remains fully operational, adequately staffed, and technologically equipped to manage high call volumes - meeting the needs of refugees who live both in camps and outside, including those unable to visit UNHCR offices in person.
The European Union’s continued contribution underscores its solidarity with refugees and host communities in Jordan. UNHCR remains committed to further enhancing digital solutions, improving service accessibility, and ensuring that both registration and the Helpline continue to serve as safe, reliable, and inclusive gateways to protection.
