From Thursday 24 September to Sunday 27 September, UNHCR will be at the Gothenburg Book Fair, with a programme exploring the impact of storytelling, who gets to tell stories, displacement and belonging, and the relevance of the Refugee Convention and the UN today.

From Thursday 24 September to Sunday 27 September, UNHCR will be at the Gothenburg Book Fair. The Gothenburg Book Fair is the Nordic region’s largest meeting place for literature and public debate. Each year, it brings together around 80,000 visitors, more than 800 exhibitors and some 300 seminars. Authors, experts, organisations and visitors from Sweden and around the world come together to discuss literature and some of the most pressing issues of our time.

Over the four days, we’ll be in conversation with a wide range of voices from the Nobel prize-winning author Abdulrazak Gurnah, authors Sara Osman, Suad Ali, Johannes Anyuru, Kim Thúy, Agri Ismaïl, Nicolas Lunabba, the poet Leila Inanna Sultan, Nataly Pasichnyk, the Director of the Ukraine Institute in Sweden, Svitlana Zalishchuk, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Sweden, journalists Martin Schibbye, Görrel Espelund and Alexandra Pascalidou, representatives from the Red Cross, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the UN Association in Sweden, the Archbishop Martin Modéus and more!

Our talks will cover the right to return to Ukraine, stories beyond the headline, the situation of women in Afghanistan, the impact of the Refugee Convention on lives of refugees currently in Sweden, moral leadership and what the Moomins can teach us about empathy, displacement and belonging, plus a wide range of other talks on some of the defining issues of our time. In addition, following Sida’s seminar at the Free Speech Stage, conversations will continue at the UNHCR stall, about the role of women in conflicts and peacebuilding, and digital democracy.

Come talk to UNHCR, listen to seminars and engage in our activities including the wishing tree and a game about dictatorship and the importance of democratic participation.
