Observations from UNHCR on Lithuanian law proposal on changes to the asylum system

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has submitted our observations to the Lithuanian government’s proposed amendments to the asylum procedure in the country.

UNHCR appreciates that the aim of the law proposal is to increase the efficiency of the asylum procedure, but regrets that some of the amendments significantly restrict essential procedural safeguards, and risk to negatively impact the fairness of the asylum procedure.
