- To increase awareness of refugee issues, on 20 June, there will be an opening statement given by a senior U.S. government official. A humanitarian award will be presented to the author of the bestselling book The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini, for his contribution towards raising awareness of the plight of refugees. A young refugee will speak on her personal experiences in keeping with this year's WRD theme, "Hope". The sixth annual poster contest winners will be honoured and the artwork will be displayed in an exhibition at the National Geographic Museum at Explorers Hall. All of the events will take place at the National Geographic Grosvenor Auditorium.
- On Saturday 24 June, there will be performances by musical and dance groups, as well as exhibits, reflecting diverse global cultures held at the National Geographic Museum at Explorers Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
- On Sunday 25 June, the Refugee All Stars, a musical group originally from Sierra Leone, will give a live performance at the Kennedy Center South Plaza Stage. The award winning documentary, "Refugee All Stars" will follow the performance in the Kennedy Center Family Theater. This event is free and open to the public.
- The World Affairs Council of Northern California will host a photography exhibit, entitled Surviving Darfur by UNHCR aid worker Hélène Caux, 12 May - 31 July, with a lecture presentation by Ms. Caux on 20 June.
