UNHCR has been present in Montenegro since November 1992, following the arrival of refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. Since then, UNHCR has contributed more than $65 million to Montenegro in supporting the Government of Montenegro and assisted some 140,000 refugees and internally displaced persons overall. Over the past 26 years, UNHCR has been assisting refugees from the former Yugoslavia, asylum seekers and newly recognized refugees, as well as persons in a stateless-like situation.
When the situation escalated in Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of people started fleeing from Ukraine to Montenegro, as well as other neighboring countries. UNHCR cooperates closely with the Government of Montenegro and partners to assist those people in need and provide protection and assistance.
