Egypt hosts over 800,000 refugees and asylum-seekers from diverse nationalities. Sudanese nationals make up the largest group, followed by Syrians. Other significant populations include individuals from South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Yemen, Somalia, and Iraq.

UNHCR’s five-year strategy in Egypt focuses on enhancing refugees’ access to socio-economic opportunities, promoting inclusion in national systems, and strengthening protection mechanisms. This includes improved case management, targeted support for vulnerable groups such as women and children, and deeper community engagement to ensure transparency and accountability.

UNHCR also prioritizes empowering refugee communities - especially youth - while upholding integrity, preventing sexual exploitation and abuse, and ensuring equal access to essential services for all refugees, regardless of nationality, within Egypt’s broader protection framework.
