*UNHCR’s operations in Hungary are managed by the Hungary multi-country office, which also oversees operations in Czechia, Slovakia and Slovenia, with needs budgeted jointly.

UNHCR has operated in Hungary since 1989, working in close coordination with national and local authorities, UN agencies, and civil society partners. From its office in Budapest, UNHCR also oversees operations in the Czechia, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Together with government counterparts and national institutions, UNHCR strives to ensure that refugees and asylum-seekers have access to their fundamental rights, including basic services, legal support, and protection assistance. We advocate for the inclusion of displaced persons in national systems, promote community-based support, and work to prevent and reduce statelessness.

In response to the Ukraine emergency, UNHCR collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders in Hungary to provide humanitarian support, while advocating for social protection for all Temporary Protection beneficiaries and aligning Hungary’s asylum system with EU and international standards. Public engagement remains central to our efforts to foster solidarity with asylum-seekers, refugees, and stateless persons.
