are needed in 2025 to ensure operations covered by the Thailand multi-country office* are sustained

*UNHCR’s operations in Thailand are managed by the Thailand multi-country office, which also oversees operations in Cambodia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Viet Nam, with needs budgeted jointly.

Thailand hosts over 80,000 refugees from Myanmar in nine temporary shelters managed by the Royal Thai Government (RTG) along the Thai-Myanmar border, alongside some 5,000 urban refugees and asylum-seekers from more than 40 countries, and more than half a million people registered as stateless.

Most camp-based refugees – primarily of Karen, Karenni, and Burmese ethnicity – have lived in Thailand for decades, having fled armed conflict in Myanmar since the mid-1980s. UNHCR’s work in the shelters focuses on protection and solutions, while other sectors are led by specialized NGOs.

In urban areas, UNHCR continues to conduct refugee status determination and facilitates access to emergency healthcare, education, psychosocial support, and legal and social services.

To address statelessness, UNHCR partners with a national NGO to support Thai authorities in helping stateless individuals apply for nationality, access basic rights, and prevent new cases of statelessness, contributing to Thailand’s long-standing efforts to reduce statelessness across the country.
