UNHCR in Zimbabwe supports refugees and asylum-seekers by providing protection, essential services, and durable solutions in both urban areas and Tongogara Refugee Camp.

Key statistics
23,444
people were displaced or stateless (or returning from forced displacement) within the country at the end of 2024
13,198
people were identified as asylum-seekers in the country at the end of 2024, mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo
$11.3 million
are needed in 2025 to ensure that operations and programmes in Zimbabwe are sustained
In 2024, Zimbabwe continued to face economic and environmental challenges that affected both host communities and refugee populations. High inflation, unemployment, and climate-related shocks placed pressure on essential services and limited resources available for refugee assistance. However, the 2025 national budget offers a cautiously optimistic outlook, projecting 6% economic growth, with anticipated improvements in agriculture, mining, and manufacturing.
UNHCR Zimbabwe remains committed to providing protection and finding durable solutions for refugees and asylum-seekers. With offices in Harare and at Tongogara Refugee Camp, UNHCR and its partners support individuals across key sectors: protection; education; health; food security and nutrition; shelter and core relief items; water and sanitation; access to energy; prevention of statelessness; and community empowerment.
By the end of 2024, Zimbabwe hosted over 20,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, the majority originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, and Burundi. Over 72% of the population was individually registered in UNHCR’s proGres system, allowing for more targeted and effective assistance.
