Libya

Libya remains both a major destination and transit country for significant groups of people in mixed movements. Instabilities in the wider region continue to push refugees and migrants who are embarking on perilous journeys to Libya and beyond. In particular, the onset of the conflict in Sudan has uprooted millions of Sudanese refugees, who continue to flee to neighboring countries in the region, including increasingly to Libya.

Libya hosts over 60,000 refugees and asylum-seekers who are registered with UNHCR. The country also presents a complex displacement scenario, with 125,802 people displaced inside the country (IDPs). In addition, 44,000 people have been displaced since September 2023 when Storm Daniel struck eastern Libya.

UNHCR continues to provide assistance and access to services for refugees, asylum-seekers, IDPs and host communities, prioritizing registration, access to health, cash assistance and core relief items in urban settings. UNHCR continues to seek durable solutions, such as resettlement, evacuation, and complementary pathways, for refugees and asylum-seekers, with particular attention to people most in need.
