Ensuring assessment or monitoring activities remain useful and effective over time involves reviewing and adjusting the approach based on lessons from the implementation and the use of the information and knowledge the assessment or monitoring activity generated.

The following examples of learning reviews and lessons can be used as inspiration for conducting your own learning exercise.

Please note that many of these lessons may now be outdated.

1. Learning from UNHCR-WFP Joint Needs Assessments (2023)

This global-level learning review was based on the experience of the UNHCR-WFP  Joint Programme Excellence and Targeting Hub supporting 14 assessments conducted jointly by UNHCR and WFP. The document identified commonly faced challenges across the Design, Collect, Analyze and Use phases.

2. Lessons from Regional Refugee and Migrant Needs Analysis - Americas (2019)

This document highlights the key findings from a lessons learning review on secondary data review and joint needs assessments for the Regional Refugee and Migrant Needs Analysis (RMNA) led by the Regional Inter-Agency Coordination Platform for the Response for Venezuelans (R4V).

3. Assessment Lessons Learned with a Protection Lens - Bangladesh (2017)

This thematic report provides an overview of lessons learned from assessments involving the Rohingya refugee population in Bangladesh. It provides tangible examples of how assessments in this context can be designed to avoid causing harm, encourage participation and empowerment, ensure accountability and inclusion of particularly vulnerable populations.
