“The Refugee Monologue – Stories Uncovered” Exhibition Learning about the Refugees’ Personal Experiences

11 June 2014 Also available in:
(Hong Kong SAR China) United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Society for Community Organization (SoCO) will be hosting “The Refugee Monologue: Stories Uncovered” Exhibition at Kubrick bc in Yau Ma Tei from today to 30 June in celebration of World Refugee Day. This will be an international collaboration with UNHCR offices around the world with the main theme of refugees sharing their stories.

The exhibition will showcase the stories and experiences of refugees with handmade masks, photographs, short videos, and genuine artifacts that belonged to refugees, representing what their lives were like facing persecution. Utilizing the exhibition’s interactive elements, visitors will get the chance to learn about the lives of refugees from Asia, Africa and other regions who have lost their homes and everything they have ever owned.

One refugee, Robert, shares how waiting aimlessly was all he could do, not knowing when he could truly have a “life” again, until that one momentous day when he received the special call that he can resettle elsewhere. Others would reveal similar stories of waiting for a future that seems so out of reach and longing for home and their families, but for many, their future still lies unknown. Through their “monologues,” refugees will personally share with the viewer reasons why they fled their home countries, what they had lived through and endured, and what tiny hope and aspirations they still hold on to.

Tickets for the 7th Refugee Film Festival are already on sale. The film festival will take place from 20 to 25 June at Broadway Cinematheque in Yau Ma Tei. The exhibition and film festival are held in adjacent venues. Visitors will be able to enjoy both at the same time. The 7th Refugee Film Festival is organized by UNHCR.

The Refugee Monologue - Stories Uncovered

"I will never forget how I was tortured by the Taliban and their gangs. My face was covered in blood and tears.” – Nelson, from Afghanistan

Refugees hide themselves behind a self-painted mask, with only colors and symbols to share their stories and deepest feelings.

Refugees from the Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire and other countries tell their stories. By scanning the QR code with a smartphone, people can view their monologues directly.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on 14 December 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee issues. It strives to ensure that everyone has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another state, with the option to voluntarily return home when conditions are conducive for return, integrate locally or resettle to a third country. UNHCR has twice won the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1954 for its ground-breaking work in helping the refugees of Europe, and in 1981 for its worldwide assistance to refugees.
