What we want to achieve?

UNHCR in Albania works in cooperation with the relevant structures at the Ministry of Interior, namely Directorate for Asylum and Citizenship, Border and Migration Police, National Centre for Asylum Seekers, as well as with other line ministries and civil society to promote access to the asylum system for people in need of international protection, to provide them legal aid, psychosocial aid and accommodation, and to help asylum-seekers and refugees enjoy their rights and fulfil their obligations. UNHCR’s support to the authorities includes capacity building and advocacy.

UNHCR in Albania supports authorities at the national and local levels, including the Albanian Parliament, to strengthen mechanisms which will ensure identification, prevention and reduction of persons at risk of statelessness. In order for individuals at risk to acquire birth registration and nationality documents, UNHCR supports the work Tirana Legal Aid Services NGO to ensure that individuals have an identity and are registered in civil status office
