Contributions to UNHCR
Estonia is a reliable donor to UNHCR and has provided annual donations since 2008. In recent years, Estonia’s funding to UNHCR has increased substantially. In 2016, the country gave its most generous allocation of almost EUR half a million to UNHCR. In 2015, Estonia increased its unearmarked funding, so it amounted to more than one quarter of its total donations to UNHCR. Since 2008, Estonia has donated over EUR two million to UNHCR´s worldwide humanitarian operations. During the last couple of years, Estonia’s allocations to UNHCR have been earmarked for many of the world’s most conflict ridden countries and the most desperate humanitarian situations, including Syria, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Iraq and Ukraine.
As 2016 draws to a close, the world is witnessing a record high level of forced displacement, with over 65 million people on the move. While new refugee crises are erupting, unresolved and protracted refugee situations worldwide shows no signs of being resolved in the nearest future. The challenges faced by UNHCR in attempting to respond to multiple life-threatening crises and ever-growing humanitarian needs are rapidly expanding.
Jeena and Khaled are refugee children from Syria who were forced to flee from the brutal conflict in Syria and are now living in neighbouring Jordan.
As part of the international community’s emergency response to Syria, the Republic of Estonia has donated EUR 50,000 (USD: 64, 350) to UNHCR to assist and protect Syrian refugees in Jordan.
