UNHCR-JPF Co-Organised World Refugee Day Symposium From Aleppo to New York and Tokyo – Living and Working with Refugees
The state of global forced displacement has considerably worsened in recent years. The number of forcibly displaced persons marked a record-high number due to protracted humanitarian situations in Somalia and Afghanistan and their neighbouring countries, new or reignited humanitarian crises in Syria, Iraq, South Sudan and Yemen. The environment surrounding refugees and migrants has also worsened. At sea, a frightening number of refugees and migrants are losing their lives each year; on land, people fleeing war are finding their way blocked by closed borders; and refugees and migrants face rising hostility as their existence is complicated with security and other socio-economic concerns.
Large movements of refugees and migrants have political, economic, social, developmental, humanitarian and human rights ramifications, which cross all borders. These are global phenomena that call for global approaches and global solutions, which had led to the UN Summit on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants and the New York Declaration in September 2016, reaffirming the international responsibility sharing and cooperation in response to large scale movement of refugees and migrants. The issue of forced displacement does not remain in one country but affects neighbouring countries and consequently the worldwide communities, and requires a network of assistance and solidarity by various actors of international community including Japan.
Some countries have been accepting large numbers of refugees as they value diversity. “Living and working with Refugees” is a reality in Japan as well. The large-scale movement of people compels cross-cutting cooperation and assistance involving the “countries of origin, transit and destination”, “humanitarian and development agencies”, and “public organisations, civil society and private sector”. This 5th joint symposium hosted by UNHCR and JPF will see the participation of NGOs, private sector, government and UN agencies, as well as personalities such as a private sector employing refugee, a Buddhist monk from Fukushima and university student, and will focus on the following issues: (1) international response to the global movement of people, (2) innovative refugee assistance realised by diverse actors in Japan, and (3) realisation of a diverse society that is one of the key values for accomplishing humanitarian response and respect of human rights. We are looking forward to your participation.
