Bescherming

A UNHCR staff member comforts a young refugee boy after his boat landed on the Greek island of Lesvos. ; Over one million refugees and migrants arrived in Europe by sea in 2015. An overwhelming majority were fleeing war and persecution. More than 80 percent of those who survived the crossing came from the world’s top refugee-producing countries.

Onderdak

Iraq / IDPs / An internally displaced person from Mosul walks inside of the Garmava transit camp near a checkpoint on a road between Mosul and Dahouk in Iraqi Kurdistan, Thursday, June 14, 2014. In the past two days 53 people from nine families fled Mosul and took refuge at the site. The camp will have the capacity to initially host some 3,000 people. UNHCR monitoring teams report that many of the 300,000 people who have sought safety in the Erbil and Duhok governorates arrived with little more than the clothes they were wearing. Many people have no money, and nowhere to go. While some stay with relatives, others are temporarily in hotels where they are exhausting what funds they have. Many families in Duhok are also sheltering in schools, mosques, churches and unfinished buildings. / UNHCR / S. Baldwin / June 2014

Medische zorg

South Sudan / Sudanese Refugees / A doctor working with a UNHCR partner organization provides Dawa Musa's granddaughter, 2 year old Huda Awad, with an inoculation upon arrival from Jamam to Gendrassa refugee camps in Maban County, South Sudan on the 9th of August, 2012. Upon arrival in Gendrassa, all refugees are provided a medical screening. Children are given a series of vaccinations and are examined for malnutrition. Those who are in need of treatment are referred to a UNHCR partner medical organization (both MSF - Medicines Sans Frontiers - and IMC - International Medical Corps were operating in Gendrassa at the time the photograph was taken) for follow up with Plumpynut, a ready to use therapeutic food (RUTF), oral rehydration salts (ORS) or other treatments as necessary. Widespread flooding in Jamam camp moved UHNCR to undertake the task of relocating thousands of refugees approximately 70 kilometers from Jamam to a new site, called Gendrassa, which is less prone to flooding, and better suited to providing for the needs of refugees. ; At the time this photograph was taken, more than 100,000 people had fled conflict in Sudan's Blue Nile State, seeking refuge across the border in South Sudan's Upper Nile State. The topography of Upper Nile is such that the area is prone to extensive flooding. During the rainy season, large potions of northern South Sudan are inundated with water, leading to high levels of malaria and other diseases. Travel in the region is also exceptionally difficult, with roads becoming impassable for months at at time.

Duurzame oplossingen

Water en sanitatie

Pakistan / Floods / A young girl collects water at a camp for displaced persons near the city of Sukker in Sindh, Pakistan. Across Pakistan, some 17 million people have been affected, with 8m people in need of emergency relief. Almost a month since the start of the flooding, the humanitarian crisis is still growing. Aid agencies say the amount of aid available is a long way from meeting the needs of those affected. A lack of proper sanitation and cramped living conditions mean disease could spread quickly though the temprorary camps that have been set up along the route of the Indus. / UNHCR / J. Tanner / 28 August 2010 ;

Onderwijs

An Afghan refugee girl, Samina is keen to learn English. She wants to be a teacher when she grows up at Kot Chandana refugee village in Mianwali, Pakistan. Samina is one of Aqeela’s student and highly inspired by her teacher who pioneered girls’ education at Kot Chandana Refugee Village. ; Aqeela Asifi won the UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award in 2015 for her dedication and hard work in bringing an education for refugee girls, who, before her arrival in the camp in 1992 did not even have a name for a female teacher. Thanks to Aqeela’s hard work, today, there are 09 primary and middle schools (4 for boys and 5 for girls) in Kot Chandana refugee camp with some 1,400 student (boys 831, girls 594) enrolled in these schools. Pakistan continue to host 1.5 million Afghan refugees, which is the world’ largest protracted refugee population till this date. Children under the age of 18 constitute 51 per cent of the total registered refugee population in Pakistan. Globally 2.6 million Afghan refugees are living in up to 92 countries and around 95 per cent of the population is hosted by just two countries: Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
